I thought this remark at the bottom of the might mouse page on apple's site was a little funny.

    http://www.apple.com/mightymouse/

scroll all the way down to read

"Mighty Mouse © Viacom International Inc. All Rights Reserved."

Is Apple paying royalties to Viacom for using the name of its famous mouse? :)

Probably they paid X amount of money for the right to use the name

I bet they paid nothing. It's good publicity for Viacom. Certainly Apple's new mouse isn't taking anything away from the image of the cartoon, and maybe a few more stations will actually pick up old Mighty Mouse reruns, which is money in the bank for Viacom.

Bottom line: Yes, Apple is or had to pay money to Viacom for the use of the trademark.

Either way, I still think it's a great name for a (computer) mouse.

Not the BT versions. Sure, it doesn't cost $70 to make, but the cheapest you'll find a BT mouse is probably $30-40. The wireless bit isn't cheap to add (yet).

It's laser too remember, not too many bluetooth laser mousesesseses going around. I've never seen one, let alone one cheaper than the $109 Wireless Mighty Mouse.

The Wireless Mighty Mouse is $10 more expensive than the MS wireless laser mouse ($99) I saw the other day and has more functionality and the MS one is RF not bluetooth.

It's really not that bad a deal.

The MM probably costs so much because for each mouse Apple paid Viacom a few dollars in royalties
