Well, the hordes of geeks are now slinking back to their lairs as Siggraph comes to a close. A few of the MacRumors regulars were able to meet up and make a sort of impromptu, mini geekfest.

jelloshotsrule, 3rdpath, mc68k and myself had lunch yesterday near the Convention Center, and today I got to check out the expo floor (thanks to 3rdpath's generous donation of his admission badge).

I'll be posting pics and impressions of the G5 later tonight...and who knows maybe you'll see some pics of the geeks themselves. ;)

well after watching us eat lunch...there ain't nothing "mini" about us...;)

but as far as a mini geek fest, i had quite a nice time. props to rower for the ride to the trolley and general hospitality. at least i now know if i ever get banned, it'll be by a nice guy...

jello, sorry to blow your cover and macrumor persona, but hey, you're actually a nice person, ntm quite patient with my dumb questions and general "duh, what's this?" tour of siggraph. i don't think you even gave me any grief about being an old codger( maybe you did and i just didn't hear it with my good ear... :D )

and mc68k, thanks for the car trip that exceeded any roller coaster or death defying ride i've ever experienced. all played out against the latest sense field soundtrack. life is just a movie within a movie...

my only regret was missing out on the free t-shirts...dayyyammmnnn itttt.

Damn, I would have loved to have been there - not been to a Siggraph ever, always wanted to.

Post some pics so we can get more for Jello-A pictorial II ;)

Color me stupid. I didn't know Siggraph was in SD. Hell, I'm in Nebraska, I could've gone. Guess I never really payed attention to this particular geek-fest before. Sounds like you fellas had a nice time. Can't wait to see pics.

    Regards,
    Gus

    Pictures galore

    Here they are!

A pic of the interior of the San Diego Convention Center...interesting architecture.

The sole G5 at Siggraph (in the Pixar booth) - side view. Couldn't assess the volume of it due to the expo noise, but it puts out very little air and heat...and it was rendering a frame from "Finding Nemo" while playing back 2 looped Quicktime files.

The G5 front view. Yes, you can definitely see the innards quite well.

And finally, the coup de grâce...the geeks (sans 3rdpath since we didn't get pictures of all of us the day he was here - you can submit one of your own, if you wish ;)).

J-lo, you didn't piss you pants for your pic? I'm disappointed :D

That pic of the convention center looks like something out of StarWars, wild.

And the G5 enclosure pic shows a good view of the heat sink on the cpu. I don't think they'd have room for 4 chips in that thing - unless they redesign a bunch.

wow, i didn't realize till i saw the pic that i was hanging with such bunch of studs...:D no wonder the chicks were digging our scene. we are so money.

and you'll never see a pic of me on m.r....i've seen the horrible things that happened to jello and eye...

i do wish there had been a camera in mc68k's car for the ride from downtown to rower's house. a cross between "Bullit" and " national lampoon's vacation".:D  :D

I want to point out that the side door is open and letting light in, which is allowing you see more of the interior than you would normally see through the front grill.

    Great pics!

Ha, vniow thinks j-lo's cute. How special.....:D

After looking at the inside shot of the G5 again, I have a question as to what's *under* the inside base. There are several inches that have the structural frame where the fan and bottom G5 are resting on.

Is this wasted space or is something actually under there?

    That's not j-lo. ;)

The bottom of the case holds the power supply, so that should explain the space there.

    I'm so confused......

Anyway, that's an awful lot of space for the power supply, isn't it?

Ha, looks like I needed to caption the pic. From left to right: Rower_CPU, mc68k, jelloshotsrule. :p

They should be a similar PSU to the ones used in the Xserve and MDD PowerMacs. So, about 11x5x2. The G5s are 8 inches wide and almost 19 inches deep, so with any fans in there it's pretty much taking up all that space.

that's almost equal with the # of elvis comments i get. ;) the majority of comments i get relate to shaving my chops off
