I just received my new MacBook Pro yesterday, and I am absolutely loving it. However, I've had a few problems with the SD and iTunes. The first thing I did was do software upgrade, and among other things, I was able to upgrade to the latest version of iTunes. After that, I tried importing some of my music from my old CD's (music that I burned myself) and after starting the import:

    1) The SD, which was pretty loud for some reason, just quieted completely, but the import process froze. And on top of that, iTunes froze! Should I just un-install and re-install iTunes? Because the SD works fine on regular DVDs and such (FrontRow is so cool!). Also,

    2) Is there any way to re-order your library in iTunes? Because iTunes last night never seemed to copy from my CDs in the right order, and I couldn't edit them so that they would play in the order in which they would play on a regular CD.

    3) I know this is a pretty long post, but how would I go about shutting off one of the cores (Intel Core Duo) for better battery life? With screen brightness low, bluetooth and aiport off, I get about a good 4 1/2 hours. But I'm wondering what's the exact process for shutting off a core.

    4) Finally, what is the best 3rd party app for me to copy and compress DVD movies onto my harddrive? I've heard about MacTheRipper, but is that mirror site still up?

    5) One more thing: I tried to download AIM for Mac (PPC version only, I believe), and I was highly unsuccessful. Was anybody else here who got a new MacBook able to go to aim.com or download.com for the Mac Version of AIM and download it? Because it tried to open a binary in Microsoft Excel for some reason... it was really hard.

I know this is a very long post, and feel free to only ask one of the questions, but I'm just a newbie with a new computer with some minor issues. Thanks for your help!

    1) Sounds like an issue with that specific disc. Is it scratched or marked. Uninstlling and reinstalling iTunes is not likely to have much of an effect.

    2) You can create a playlist to play them in any order you want. Or add the track number column to the display and order by that.

    3) Install the CHUD tools. This adds a processor preference pane to system preferences.

    4) I use Handbrake

    5) Use iChat? It connect to AIM...

I was wondering if anyone had any problems with the 1.83 not sleeping when the lid is closed. Mine won't sleep after I close the lid. Even after say 10 minutes.

I've seen my 2.0 do this a couple of times. That said this would be better in it's own thread rather than hijacking this one.

    1) I don't know... I tried a couple of disks and it would start to import (loudly), slow down and quiet, and then freeze. Grant it, these were my old burn CDs, but I thought iTunes could read anything.

    2) I tried to highlight and reset play count, but I wasn't able to actually move or change the selections at all! It was really frustrating for me. How exactly do I assign play count numbers?

    Thanks.

Press Cmd-J to get View Options, put a tick next to Track Number, then click on this column to sort it.

Track Number is not the same as Play Count. (Play Count tells you how many times you've listened to a track and is not editable)

Play counts are just that: the number of times you have played a song. You cannot assign these (well, you can via AppleScript), iTunes updates then as you go along. I was talking about Play Lists not play count. Anyway there is a track number field which sounds more like what you want. It many not be showing: there should be an option to add it to the view somewhere...

    See Malcster's answer above :)
