These are steps I use, wonder if I can do better? If I am using outdated software etc...

    1) Convert the .MKV file containing 6 channel audio using VisualHub to Apple TV 5.1 file, obtain .mov

    2) Open an audio.mov file, that contains AAC track. Select EDIT>SELECT ALL, COPY

    3) Open converted file .move, Select EDIT > ADD TO MOVIE (this adds a AAC audio track to the file)

    4) Add this .mov to iTunes for streaming to my ATV.

Step #2 and #3 have been required since previous ATV software updates when it broke the ability to play AC3 audio.

I wonder if there are better ways or quicker ways to accomplish my goal of being able to watch 6 channel MKV files on ATV.

Instead of using Visual Hub you could just encode the MKV with Handbrake - it supports multiple audio tracks. If your MKV only has 6 channel sound, Handbrake can convert it to DPLII as well as pass through the AC3.

MKV and MOV are just containers. What matters are the codecs used in the video and audio streams.

Aye, i've been using handbrake for this for some time now and love the fact it's a 1 stop shop.

However just my suggestion if you go this route is to use the current SVN build. the current production release i had issues where it would crash 1/2 though on multiple MKV files. the SVN build cures this.
