I previously Posted this: I restarted my computer after experiencing some slowing while using FCP. After I restarted, when the desktop loaded again, it only loaded the spotlight bar in the top right corner, and nothing else. The pin wheel comes up when spot light is moused over. I tried doing a safeboot several times, the computer starts up fine then, but then the problem continues when returning to a normal start up. I also tried upgrading to 10.4.7 while in safeboot but it still continues. Any Ideas would be Awesome, Thanks!

So I Did another safe boot, and now wierd files appeared in the trash, with extensions like: .db, and .aux. any ideas would be great. Thanks!

Maybe post a screenshot. Are you saying Spotlight is the only icon that pops up? Do you have the FrontRow hack installed? If you open a new user account, do the problems carry over? :)

    OS X Problems Continue...

Following the advice of Mad Jew, I created a new user name, and it started up, how ever, when i tried to go back to the original name, the problem still persists. I am in the process of tracking down the install CD to do a disk repair, in the mean time are there any other ideas of how to fix it? Also i cant do a screen shot in the account that is having the error, because nothing loads except spotlight. There is no front row hack on the machine. Thanks!

If the new user account works properly then it probably isn't a disk issue but if you can't find your Restore Discs, you can always manually run fsck from Single User Mode. :)

In the meantime, I would simply transfer everything over to this new/functional account and use this instead. This seems like the simplest option.

Did you recently add anything to your Login Items? I recently had an issue when I added Safari to my Login Items and it caused my system to freeze. Try booting into Safe Mode and remove all Login Items inside you Account Preferences.

No worries. Can we take this to mean it's all good now? :)

ultimatly no, the problem is still there, and for the post above i tried several safe boots and permissions repairs, nothing fixed it. I recently tried to remove bad fonts from the system, of which there were a few, but still the problem persists. For the time being I will be using the new user, but I still want to get to the root of the problem, or atleast a way to fix it, because ignoring it, dosent mean it went away. Thanks!

Fair enough. If the problems are limited to this one bad account, then you can narrow down your search to something bad in your Home folder of that account. In particular, look through the customisations you've made to the system. :)
