Moto has the 7455 Chip listed as 5 or NOT RECOMMENDED(DECLINING)(5)
I thought this was interesting as maybe they have something new. I guess Apple really needs the 970.

Life Cycle Stage Code (5)
NOT RECOMMENDED(DECLINING) Capacity beginning to decline. Orders and shipments permitted. Product not recommended for new designs. Note: See EIA-724 (Product Life Cycle Data Model) for more information.

http://e-www.motorola.com/webapp/sp...code=MPC7455&nodeId=018rH3bTdG8653#orderables

Makes you second guess yourself if you're planning on buying a new computer. Maybe someone already mentioned this, but I thought I would if no one has.

Okay Sir Baked alot. Do you know the speeds or where any info is on that? I'd like to read it so I can get my hopes up.

I do. I'm trying to cut the PDF down to an attachable size (it's 500k right now). I'll post it if I can. I've attached a .jpg of the first page.

Acrobat Reader is the devil. I'll just post the info:

16.6 watts (max) @ 1.3GHz* (7.5 watts typical @ 1GHz)
512k L2 cache
166/200Mhz MPX bus
Q2 2003
.13 micron 8LM SOI manufacturing process (I believe the LM thing is layers of metal. IBM's 750fx uses a 6 layer process)

*There are three "specs" for G4s, P, L, and N. P is high performance, L is medium, and N is low. Posted specs are for the L version. The P version is not listed for either the 7457/47 or 7455/45. Since the L 7455 goes to 1067MHz (and the P version obviously goes to at least 1.25GHz, as proved by the PowerMacs), I would expect the P 7457 to go well above 1.3GHz.

G4's

If you do some exploration you find that Motorola only has 1 U.S. distributor for G4 processors. A company called Avnet, Inc. If you search their catalog by part number here:

http://www.avnetmarshall.com/dynamic/search

for part numbers beginning with: XPC7455 you see a listing of G4's at 733, 800, 867, 933, 1000. The only ones in stock are 800's and 867's... maybe Apple stocked up for the winter.

The other thing I noted was the absence of 1.25Ghz parts. Maybe it is OC'd like everyone thinks?

Um... yeah, that is why we have such annoying fans.
Because we are overclocking and wil probably will continue to do such intill the release of the next batch. (never? or 7457?)

Yeah next step: Water cooling! :p

According to the Motorola PDF there should be revision 3.3 parts out now. The only listed parts are rev 2.1. That makes me think that the higher clocking G4s are not publicly available.

Moto-Rooter

I found another company that distributes G4 chips called Arrow electronics. There you can buy a 1Ghz G4 for $388.61.

Note: Cheapest P4 2.8Ghz is $371.99 on pricewatch.com, that includes shipping too.

Come on Steve... time for Marklar! ;) Who cares if it's Intel... AMD... Moto... IBM... I just want fast chips that aren't OC'd. The sooner Moto is gone, the sooner the switch campaign has a chance.

They're not overclocked. The manufacturer CANNOT overclock a chip, because they decide what is overclocked. The Motorola document says that revision 3.3 G4s should be shipping now. I'd say there's about a 99% chance that the dual 1.25GHz G4 is a rev 3.3 7455A that isn't overclocked. Also, an IBM switch wouldn't need this "Marklar" thingy since they make PowerPC (An x86 switch would be stupid beyond belief, so I'm hoping for PowerPC 970s).

Is the price for the 1 Ghz G4 volume pricing as in 1000 CPU's? Say 1000 G4's @ 371.99. If so, that's an expensive piece of equipment.

The 7457 is suppose to come out in Q2 2003. But we'll see.

Last time I checked Dell doesn't manufacture Pentium 4's... and Apple doesn't manufacture Motorola G4's. But Apple and Dell do design their own motherboards. I think Apple could overclock a pair of 7455's, stick a very large and loud fan in the case and sell it.

I think the decision to go with Moto in the 80's was a bad idea... but that's just me. :p

The status of this chip is not really directed at computers where the update cycle is quite short. It is intended for companies that expect to use the same part for several years without having to update the hardware - like telecom equipment, automobile controllers, etc.

I belive on other documentation that what Moto is doing is just raising the clock speed not like upgrading anything.
If anything apple might just be oc'ing the chips. If apple releases a newer faster 7455 chip than it is overclocked but it will probably be the newer one.

Anyway what other reason can you give for that extra noisey fan?

Hey is possible to get one of these and just drop it in under the heatsink of an original g4 500?

That would be good and less than the $700 upgrade companies charge.

I guess you could, but you'd also have to have someone solder it on the daughter board and then find some cache memory and have someone solder that on, but in theory you could.

Has anyone actually tried this?

The original G4 didn't have the L3 cache that the G4+ has, so it has a different number of pins.

In response to the OCing argument. I remember seeing a picture of the processor in a dual 1.25GHz (can't remember where though). It was marked 1250. I would agree with the person who posted that Moto is selling them directly to Apple (perhaps pre-public release rev 3.3s? That would account for the 1.25GHz delay at launch).
