Wow, only 20,000 protesters. He's quite popular in Austria then.

    Oh and there's this:

Yes, for all you conservatives opposed to flag burning, that is indeed George W. Bush defacing an American flag while on foreign (Austrian) soil.

i dislike bush as much as anyone, but does the US gov't get reimbursed for all the costs of foreign dignitaries' visits here? i realize that the costs (especially security) are nowhere near the same, i'm just saying..

you know what -- that actually disgusted me. i can see why people burn american flags, out of protest, and i support their right to do so.

but to see the commander in chief do it? that's really outrageous, a complete lack of respect and probably a complete lack of awareness of the symbolism. maybe next time someone can present him with a copy of the constitution to autograph. or the bible.

I'm sure it's no big deal to a guy who's already wiped his ass with the constitution...

We are all supposed to be reimbursed, but there is no real way to enforce any of that. There's supposed to be something upwards of $22 million of unpaid parking tickets in Manhattan from visiting dignitaries for the UN.

In his defense, it *does* say "provided by the management for your protection".

You should see what he's costing us for his stay in the White House. It's typically a half trillion dollars every year.

He must know how much people hate him. I know there's a bubble and all, but he's got to have some idea. Probably just thinks we're all deluded.

My head almost exploded because of the implied irony.

This is a gross mischaracterisation. According to Ugg in the "Gun Nuttery" thread, the US gets more in tax from the UN being in NY than it pays in dues even when it is actually paying in full. This from Wiki:
In other words, it's proportional for everyone except the US, which effectively gets the UN at a discount and gets the tax income and still doesn't pay its bills.

It's not just the taxes but rent, money spent in restaurants, clothes, phones, etc, etc.

We'd probably collect a lot less taxes and income from UN spenders if Bolton got his way and sheared off the top 10 floors of the UN.

Actually John D. Rockefeller donated the land for the building and it has since been declared as belonging to all UN member states, so officially UN HQ is not part of the United States. Similar to how the Vatican isn't part of Italy.

I'd be interested to see the legal documents behind that. I would imagine it's difficult for a private citizen to give away part of the US.

I mean, what would happen if I (for example) wanted to donate my land to the Swedes?
