    Does anyone here use MS XP and are not happy with the way it sorts files in a directory listing?

    (I know there are words to describe these different sorting methods, so don't flame me for not using them, I just don't know what they are)

    It now sub-sorts files by how many digits are in a name. Does anyone know how to turn OFF this new sorting method?
    Since we read left to right, it only makes sense to me to sort in this manner, not by what number is smaller in value. I mean these are file names, not math formulas.

    As an example of what I mean (in case your scratching your head)

    Old MS way to sort;

    123.txt
    123098.txt
    1249089.txt
    1258.txt
    2456.txt

    MS XP sorting method;
    123.txt
    1258.txt
    2456.txt
    123098.txt
    1249089.txt

    i never had it do that to me when i used XP... do you have it set to "sort by name"? that sorting method makes no logical sense. it's not sorted by name at all. are you sure it isn't sorting by something other than the name?

    THANKS A BUNCH!!!

    It does sort the old way now.

    For those looking to try this out, the setup we were on didn't have the Key word "Explorer" under "policies" key word, so we had to first create that key word then create the DWORD as stated in article.

    And of corse, a restart was required to see the new (old) sort method.

    Thanks again for doing the leg work in the search for me.
