I have a MBP that is about a year old.

Lately, it's been suddenly shutting down when running on battery power when the power goes under 10%. I've been meaning narrow down the problem and call AppleCare about this but I haven't been that worried about it since I rarely run on battery power for extended periods.

Then last night I noticed the battery wasn't charging, even though I was running with the laptop plugged in (the % charged in the battery meter stayed the same for 30 minutes). So I reached under the laptop, pressed the battery button, and pressed the battery itself. That seemed to do it. The battery started charging and I thought to myself, "ok, maybe the battery is loose somehow or something is jammed in the crack between the battery and the case. I'll look at it tomorrow." (I was in bed about to go to sleep and the light was already off and my wife was already asleep.

Well, I finially took a close look at my battery and the battery is bulging outward, with the aluminum sheathing pulling apart. I wonder how long it's been like that???

Turn it off and call Apple IMMEDIATELY. They should be able to get your a replacement by Monday. Just make sure it hasn't made any damage to surrounding components...

OK, a new battery is on its way... This is one of those cases where Apple will send the replacement part up-front... nice.

I looked on Apple's site and there is a battery exchange program for certain 15" MBP batteries (of which mine is one). I don't know how I didn't know about this before.

Anyone with a matching machine/battery should probably send their battery in sooner rather than later. My bulging battery was apparently one step away from being an exploding battery...
