    Hello...

Currently I have a Dual 2.0 PPC G5 that I'm looking to replace with a newer Intel Mac Pro.

I'm wondering which one is the best bang for the buck. I was looking at the early 2009 2.66 quad core (MB871LL) because of price and that it seems to be better then the previous models. Or is it worth buying the new 64bit model (MC560LL) It seems the geekbench scores are fairly close so I don't know if I can justify the new machine being twice the cost.

I don't want to spend more then I have to but at the same time I want something that will be usable for around 4-5 years.

I do basic video editing with Final Cut which is ok on the G5 but it's the render and export times that are killing me.

    None of them.

If you've had enough patience to tolerate your G5 for this long, then you'll be able to wait another month or two to see what Apple's plans are for a new model. Most people believe that a new model will be released in March when Intel starts shipping a new generation of Xeon processors. Others think that the Mac Pro may die as Apple focuses on higher volume machines that now have some Mac Pro benefits from the use of Thunderbolt peripherals.

If you can afford a new MP, I'd wait for the next model to be released.

If you cannot afford a new MP, get the newest one you can afford.

If it's urgent then get a 2009 2.66GHz Mac Pro and replace the processor with a 3.33GHz one.

It it's not urgent then wait and see what Apple replace it with.
