so I'm familiar with the new iPod rumors, but i'm facing a dilemma. My 4G 40GB is shot, and i'm going through iPod withdrawl.

Is the chance of a new model in April good enough to hold off buying a new one for a month and a half? Can someone handicap this for me?

If the ruomor is true and it is the touch screen coming. I was not to thrilled about so I was going to go ahead and buy the current ipod. Probably best to hear what others are saying is coming and see if its worth it to you to get.

Another temp option is you could buy a shuffle and just use it for now, ebay it when the new video ipod is out or just use it as a jump drive. Just an idea to help get you over the hump till April to see if it really comes out.

If you can wait 1-2 months, I would hold off. They are due for a refresh soon, and I think it would be worth holding off for due to some of the cool rumors we have been hearing about. Even if those rumors don't come to fruition, you'd probably still see a capacity increase+/price drop, which is better than nothing.

Oh yeah and don't for get about better battery life.. That right there IMO could really be worth holding off for. But like I said if you can't wait just get something cheap to hold you over.

I also would wait for the new model.

If you need a temporary "fix," might I suggest the iPod Shuffle? It seems fairly cheap right now and might make a good short-term solution.

You can always "regift" it later.

Yeah, i have a shuffle. It's great for the gym, but it does not cut it for daily use in the car and at work. I'm one of those completists who NEEDS to have my entire music collection on me at all times (it's a bit of an obsession).

I was actually planning on buying last night, but the Apple Store closed before i got around to going.

Side note - my 4G has a whacked out hard drive. i'm not interested in spending the $80-$100 to replace the drive. Apple will give me 10% off a new purchase if i turn it in for recycling - think i can do better than $40 US on eBay? (couple mid-sized scratches on the screen).

Yeah i am sure you can do much better than 40 on ebay. Just search around and see what broken ones are going for. But heck you could probably do better than that on here.

Since you're iPod-less, why not buy a 512MB shuffle to hold you over until this "new iPod" arrives. :) Just a thought.

He already has a shuffle... Said it was not enough cause to just hold him over.

Well, one thing's for sure - by purchasing a 5G, i'd make MR very happy, since it would be a virtual guaruntee of a new iPod announcement

I'm in a very similar situation - the drive in my 3rd gen is shot, my 4th gen was stolen last year. My wife and I were at the Apple store about a week ago and we almost bought new iPods for the both of us (30gb for her, 60gb for me). But then I couldn't stomach the $700 price tag, so I opted not to get one for myself. Besides, I swore that I wouldn't buy a new one until Apple fixes the problem in my sig. Unfortunately I don't see that happening any time soon. :(

So the next day I ended up buying a used 40gb on eBay. Snagged it for about $100 + shipping, which was a heck of a steal, considering I saw plenty of others going for $150 - $220+. As long as it's in decent shape when it arrives, it'll hold me over for awhile. Plus, Apple doesn't get the benefit of that sale, so I get to stick to my principles on my one pet peeve. ;)

New generations of iPods tend to come out about once a year, so I'd be surprised if a 6th generation comes out before the end of this year. Of course, I could be wrong, but I'm not buying the rumors on that. There'll be a capacity bump when larger drives are available, and it wouldn't surprise me to see that in the next couple months. I see 3 choices:

    • If you want or need more than 60gb, wait a little bit and see if 80gb comes along.
    • If you really want more features like whatever's rumored, maybe you could get a used one (and like others said, you can get some $$ for your broken one on eBay to help offset the cost) until 6th generation comes out.
    • If the current generation does everything you need/want, get one now.
