I got an email from my school today....apparently they're selling some old computers. I was thinking about picking one of these up for a music server or something? Here's the description:

Apple G4 Silver towers, 867mhz, 40+ gig hard drives, keyboard, mouse,
    large tube monitor - $235.
Each unit so configured with the original operating system.
They do not include speakers, a modem or any other software.
These computers may have a bad USB port.

Does this sound like a good deal? Thanks for the advice!

That's not a lot of power, but certainly enough for some lightweight use, if you the physical space to spare. (Note: some G4 tower models are fairly loud by Apple standards--may not be ideal for music in some settings.)

Awesome. I thought it sounded like a good deal, but wasn't sure. Glad to hear you all think it is.

Back up the truck buddy. I would add RAM, find yourself a copy of MS Office Student edition, and then eventually replace the monitor with a 19" LCD. That would be a sweet setup for next to nothing. I'm jealous.

    (Though I don't know why I should be jealous - I have a 1.67ghz PBG4 with 1G RAM. You should be jealous. :D )

Note that the original operating system might be some variant of OS 9.

Likely, but maybe your school sells Tiger cheaply?

I actually already have an iMac G5 (it sounds like some of you may think this would be my first mac). I have Microsoft Office and Tiger, so that's not a problem. RAM would most likely be in order- especially if I install Tiger, but for a second mac, it's still sounding like a good deal. Thanks for all the input, by the way. :)

Yeah, it's a better deal, since you already have Tiger and Office. Don't have to go out and buy that, which would make the price go up near Mini category.

Just add a little memory, and you're set. Plus you can always boot into OS 9, when you want to feel nostalgic.
