I just had to buy a new Apple tv box and have been able to resync/restore the content from the iTunes library to the new box. However I find that a couple of movies that I "rented" just before the old box "died" are not viewable on the new box (message reads....this movie is not allowed to be viewed on this Apple tv box").
The movies I previously bought are viewable though. Is this the way the system works, ie a rented movie is only playable on the box it is downloaded to, or is there a way around this....?
    Thanks...

Why don't you just watch the movies you've rented on your old AppleTV then just make all future rentals on your new one? Rentals don't last very long, after all.

There's really no workaround to it. But I had this issue before and just wrote to Customer Service (wasn't able to ever view it on the original machine) and they reimbursed me for the rental. They may do the same for you assuming you haven't watched it already.

email and EXPLAIN to apple itunes store though your account in itunes, they will credit or allow you to re-download it.

you shall find the report a problem button under purchase history.
