So I'm considering getting Final Cut Express HD for the LiveType and Soundtrack as I already have FCP3, and don't need the extra features of FCP5, but like those other two apps.

However, I looked at release dates for FCE 1, 2 and HD.

Version 1 was released right about MWSF 2003.
Version 2 was released right about MWSF 2004.
Version 3 (a.k.a. HD) was released right about MWSF 2005.

If that pattern holds true, it would seem that MWSF 2006 would be ripe for a new version of Final Cut Express. If the new version would include either filter key-framing or batch capture, I would definitely wait because I don't need it in any particular rush, and then I'd be able to scrap FCP altogether since FCE HD supports Apple's new real-time effects. Could the next FCE do some core graphics magic? That too would be worth it.

I searched the forums and couldn't find an discussions on FCE in January as all MWSF talk in revolving around Intel Macs and the Front Row 2.0 idea. So what do you guys think? Is FCE 4 likely?

There will be some sort or new version in the next few months - at the very least to release a version of FCE with universal binaries.

Although based upon past experience, the odds are that there will be an update of FCE announced at MacWorld in January to ship within a few weeks. If you can wait until MacWorld, do so.

I think that MWSF will show a slew of Core Graphics/Video apps from Apple. I think that iLife '06 will feature it prominently as well as FCE. I know that the Final Cut apps use real-time effects, but AFAIK it's not Core technology based. I really haven't seen much serious exploitation of this new software that Apple wrote other than the occasional eye-candy. I think that it would be awesome if Apple finally started to take real advantage of it.

I'd like to see a new version of Logic Pro/Express (Intel ready) sometime next year, along with FCE 4.

The one thing that I wanted when I used FCE-HD a couple of months back were animatable filters (mentioned in the first post). Well and a much faster computer...
