Toshiba fit 20GB into new 1.8 inch hardrive (http://www.pcworld.com/news/article/0,aid,79727,00.asp), and apple release firewire 2, compatible with USB 2.0...

Now a smaller, 20GB, firewire 2 iPod must be coming, to go with my newly orderd 17" Powerbook.

Steve couldn't announce too much at MWSF...

hum, you realize that article is a year old? the 20-gig iPod already has this drive in it, unless i'm mistaken... the big thing is whether there will be a 40-gig anytime soon...

and there are several threads on an iPod 2, lots of rumors flew about an iPod with color screen for video playback...

Speed isn't such an issue that they're going to be sticking FW2 on it anytime soon, after the first sync it's quite fast to update your iPod. The next time Apple updates the iPod line, maybe. but it doesn't really warrant an upgrade of it's own...

[edit] didn't realize this is your first post... Welcome to MacRumors :)

    Re: 40GB - thanks

    Jason,

I definitely agree-- i'd like to use it to keep a handy backup of my important files and apps, as well as music library, so 20-gig doesn't cut it for me. Shouldn't be too long before we see this capability, as soon as they come up with 1.8" 40 gig drives :)

Not sure about video tho, i mean it'd be cool to have the ability but does it justify the potential price increase? I'd just like to see a firewire to component adaptor that displays video at a nice res on an external display - notably a TV. I just can't imagine squinting at the tiny display to try and watch a movie!

    :)

I don't believe the iPod's HD is fast enough to warrant Firewire800

that's right If there was a faster disk in it now that would be a lot faster...

the iPod uses about 200-250MBps of the 400MBps,
so it would be useless to put in there right now, probably in half a year or a year when all the macs have firewire 800 build in..! that's another story, though it still wouldn't use the entire speed!!
