Or did I misunderstand something? Logic escapes me, but if a device is capable of video shouldn't it also take pictures...

You aren't the only one that is confused. But it looks like it won't do pictures... yet. It seems easy for Apple to do it through a software update.

From David Pogue's chat with Steve Jobs:

    Q. How come the Nano can now record video, but can’t take stills?

    A.
The sensors for doing video are fairly thin. The sensors for doing a still camera, at much higher pixel resolution — and we’d really like to have autofocus — they are just way too thick to ever fit inside the Nano.

I think it should take pictures too and I'm slightly disappointed that it doesn't. But I feel like eventually Apple could update that with some software. At least the camera is there.

So will you purchase another model iPod that doesn't take pictures either?

Why the nano needed any sort of camera is beyond me. I'm betting most iPod nano owners already have a cell phone that does stills and video -- albeit crappily in a lot of cases. The iPhone 3GS still camera is about the bare minimum you'd want to really spend money on. I doubt the nano camera is as good.

3 Reasons I'm not buying the new nano:

1: Takes only videos. (I would use it almost exclusively for photos, if I could)

2: A pedometer that you have to pay extra to use (needs the Nike+ adapter)

3: No memory increase (this just amazes me)

#2 is not correct. The pedometer is built into the new nano. Check out the hands on videos popping up everywhere. To test, people are just shaking the nano up and down and it's "counting" steps.

Yeah, all they said was that the pedemetre can be used WITH your Nike+ account (so I would assume if you walked to work you could just use the iPod to count your steps and track it on the Nike+ page without having to use the Nike+ sensor and receiver in your shoes).

The whole pedometer thing really surprises me. Talk about a step backwards in technology. As inaccurate as the nike+ sensors can be, pedometers are notoriously and shockingly inaccurate. It's the nature of the technology - counting steps is just not a good way to judge distance.

I wanna thank the OP for making this thread as I was genuinely confused on this very point. Thanks Apple for screwing us once more ...

I just really can't believe that the Nano doesn't do pictures and that the Touch didn't get the same camera as the 3GS to do pics and video because I simply can not understand why anyone would want a device that did all those things that wasn't their phone too.

    Apple:

Leave the cameras out of Nanos and Touches, and just make iPods. The iPhone is your one stop shopping destination.

I'm not entirely sure what they did exactly to 'screw us'? The nano is the exact same, only with features added that don't take away from anything previous, right? Oh, they took away some of the price didn't they? It certainly didn't go up, at the very least. If they took away features from the previous nano then I guess you could make an argument.

My thoughts exactly. If you are upset at what you didn't get, I would hate to be around your house at Christmas time.

"You got me a coffee maker that doesn't have a built-in camera? How dare you? I got screwed again!"

    -or-

I'll just keep the MP3 player I currently have and not do an upgrade.

video and still sensors and lenses are different. When you combine both you usually dont get good results on either side. You can get decent results but not good results.

The nano didnt need any kind of video or camera though. Just make it an audio player and put the video or still camera into the touch.

Well that would be nice if the pedometer worked without the nike+ adapter. I called apple to ask them, and they said you need the adapter...

    Go figure.

I was going to replace my original iPod Nano and pass it down to somebody else and get the new one for myself. But I'm going to stick to my current iPod Nano - it's still as flawless as it was the day I purchased it.
