I just received my new MacBook (1.83 GHz, white with 1GB RAM). I've only had it for a few hours, but, so far, no mooing or whining or any other weird problems that others have had. The serial number starts with 4H6260.

The only "flaw" I can find is that I have to tilt the display back quite far to see it at the right contrast, otherwise, black appears gray and the colors look too washed out. Turning down the brightness doesn't help. Is there any way to adjust this? Will calibrating fix it? I'm concerned that on a plane, it's going to be hard to see the screen because you often can't tilt the sceen back very far on those cramped airplane seats.

Just got ours too. Haven't turned it on yet, I'll report back. Any you or anyone else answer this, how many disks does this ship with? I could only find two, both say OSX. Is iLife on these? Thanks!

Yea, iLife is preinstalled on all Macs running OS X.

Trajectory: that's odd. I don't have to lean my screen backwards to see colors normally…*try calibrating it, yes, and if that doesn't work go to Apple's website and see if anyone else has that problem.

drake: Yes, there are only two, and yes, iLife is on them. They should be reinstall discs – they have all the data on them that came with your MacBook, so if you ever have to do a clean reinstall (just make sure to save your data that the DVDs can't replace) they're what you use to do it.

Hey, got more questions. I just turned the Macbook on and I'm downloading the updates (10.4.7 wasn't on it). Anyway, something I noticed was after about three minutes, the screen dims if I don't do anything with the computer. Now, I'd understand that if I was running on battery, but I'm plugged in. I checked the power settings, and it is set to put the display to sleep after 15m, but this isn't 15m but three. This is the first laptop I've had since 1994, so I don't know if this is normal.

Oh, another thing, can I walk away with this downloading and not worry that it will go into sleep mode?

This one is more of a comment than a question. I was surprised to find the battery with a 90% charge when I started it. Guess they charge them before sending them out.

There is an option in energy saver that says "Automatically reduce brightness before sleep" uncheck that option if you would like to prevent the dimming.

You can leave your computer downloading and it shouldn't go to sleep. I am 99% sure.

Yes, the batteries ship out charged.

    Enjoy your new mac!

That was fast! Seemed odd that it would go dim 3 minutes after I stop using the computer. I'll give your suggestion a try right after the computer reboots (downloads done).

    Thanks!

I just checked the Apple support site and see that there are others who have the same problem. The color from top to bottom is very different no matter what angle you view it. The top is fully saturated while the bottom is washed out and faded. I tried calibrating, but, it doesn't help.

Looks like I got a MacBook with a faulty LCD.

Yep. Mine is pretty much the same way. Looks like typical bleedthrough. Not sure if I'll bother doing anything about it, no real Apple stores nearby (Victoria BC Canada) and I don't want to wait for a repair or replacement. Not that big a deal for me anyway.

Hey all, I just ordered my MacBook 2Ghz. Thanks for the heads up. I'll be checking the display to see if I have that color issue. Also, can someone give me a little feedback on the keyboard? I have an iBook G3 700 Mhz right now and am quite used to the keyboard. How does the new one feel compared to it? It looks like its rubberized or something. Oh well, either way I should be happy. Im going from a G3 350Mhz tower and the 700Mhz iBook to a whopping 2Ghz Core DUO!!! Booya! :D

It's doubtful you'll have the color issue –*but it never hurts, I guess.

The keyboard? I like it. I had an iBook G4 before my MacBook and it feels like an improvement. Your opinion may be different – who knows?
