Have Safari download certain files based on their extensions, ie .mp3 .aac .m4a .m4p would automatically dload to the users music folder in their home directory. Movies would go into movies, docs would go into documents, etc etc.

Its not original, the mozilla browsers already do this via an extension.

Also, check out the web developer extension for mozilla firebird, would be great of the Safari devs could do something like this, turned off be default for normal users and then turned on like the debug menu for web devs etc.

    What do you think?

What features would you like to see in Safari?

Apple seems to "rip" everything else from FireBird, so why not "rip" the whole browser :)

What about what they call the "kiosk mode" in iCab? That was the one thing I liked about it, how you could set the browser so it takes up the whole screen and nothing else could be done. In iCab you can choose to lock it with a password. I don't care much for the password thing, but I liked being able to expand the space with just a simple key combination.

collapse/expand toolbar nub. i miss this.

    better way to change helpers.

pithhelmit built-in. it's terrific. probably would be some legality issues, this has been to court before... plus you sometimes need to turn it off...

One thing I hate in Safari is the resizing of the browser when you close the tabs.

In Firebird the browser stays the same size when you close out the tabs, but in Safari the browser gets a little smaller. That just annoys me to no end.

Under the preferences for tabs, check the box next to "always show tab bar". No more resizing.

It'd probably be nice, but it's not really necessary for Apple to build this in, since it barely takes any work for a 3rd party to create a fullscreen browser using the Safari engine via Webcore.

There's also a utility, Saft, that already provides the capability to switch with a keystroke:

how about making Safari so it doesn't quit on you? that could be handy...

i've just been using it today and it's quit on me 3 times. i've had about 5-7 tabs open and just downloading .jpgs as well. would it matter how many items i had in the safari Downloads window? i think i might have had about 20-30 in there last time it quit... i guess i should try and keep clearing it.

has anyone else had problems with Safari quitting?

    Re: New Safari Features

I think that this feature better be optional. I might be downloading stuff just to look at, then will get rid of it. I might be downloading a bunch of related material to the same folder.

And lastely, I don't want random MP3 clips cluttering my iTunes library. I tend to use Quicktime to play the MP3s that come from random places. Why should I add a slew of random sound bites to iTunes? Especially ones that are only going to get deleted right away.

As I said, it better be optional. Some might like this feature, but there are those who won't.

Sure I can do that, but why would I want to have the tab bar constantly there? Is it so difficult to keep the window the same size when I close out one of the other tabs? Firebird seems to have no problems doing it.

    Saving Images

I am frustrated that Safari downloads images from scratch whenever I drag them from a page onto my desktop or into a folder. The image is already loaded into RAM, so this is not necessary. I also don't want the downloads window popping up for every image. Camino and every other browser get this right. I spend so much time cruising for GUI enhancements that it isn't practical for me to switch until this is fixed. Not to mention, if I load a four MB space image from NASA it's a waste of bandwidth to load transfer it twice.

    Anyone aware of a workaround?

    Of course.

I think Apple could go even further with it. User defined settings allowing people to setup conditions a la email in mail.app etc etc

    alset

Yes, Apple needs to fix this.

I have this problem from time to time too. Apple should have never gone 1.0 with Safari, it has stability and rendering problems still. Hopefully Safari 1.1 in Panther will improve this :D

All you asked for was for the window not to resize...now you want that AND not to lose those 12 pixels of window height. Jeez! :p

How is this any different from Firebird? The tabs take up space there too, even if it's just one tab (that never goes away).

If I only have one window open in Firebird there is no tab bar, I have it set the same way in Safari. When I do open the tabs in Firebird the tab bar appears as it does in Safari.

The difference is when I close out the tabs to just one window, the window doesn't resize is Firebird. In Safari is looses the tab bar and the browser gets smaller.

    64 bit Safari?

    Just some more suggestions:

Safari built using 64bit Java2 code.

    Safari using Plan9 OS..and then...

Link all of these Safari's using microkernals...one would handle
a.i. codes and interfaces..others the OSX voice interface.

Total # 6 Safari's HDTV Safari, 100MB/s Safari, low data rate
    Safari/Firebird for not 970's OS's (in earlier Java's), 3D Virtual
Reality Safari, Female distinct Safari, Male Tech Commander Safari
    ....

hmm...maybe even Mr. Steve's new Spock Box Safari..

    <--getting a 980 in 2004
