Newbie; need help recording

I am new to Mac... I need a software that allows me to record audios in various formats. Since I am doing voice, I would like an application that allows me to record in mono and 16kps. My recordings are long and I need the files to be small.

Any good freeware? Shareware? Software?

Any recommendations?

If you have a new Mac with the latest version of Garageband, the Podcast creating mode is really quite good for voice recordings. Maybe try that out.
