There's an Honor Flight scheduled from my city today.

    This is a great story...

I guess with the shutdown - there's just no time to do that sort of thing... ;)

Glad that they got in, but sad that some of the Republican congressmen worked so hard to shut down the government and then broke into the memorial as a publicity stunt to make it look like they were doing something good.

Funny that it never closes...except for now. Has no gates, walls, etc. Publicity and political stunt for sure.

I have a mental picture of a volunteer veteran wearing a VFW cap, riding his own mower, keeping up the grounds. And two others with a rented power washer, working in tandem like a firehose team, scrubbing graffiti.

I find this mental picture both honorable and sad.

House Republicans seek probe of D.C. monument closures

Don't worry. Darrell Issa is on job investigating it.

And, Rand Paul weighs in also with his "goons" comment.

On Monday the right wing is saying "Shut it all down!"

On Wednesday, they want to "investigate" the decision to shut it all down.

It would be funny if it weren't so frightening.

The thing is, is that there is nothing to shut down at the WWII monument. It is an open area, with no fences, no gates, etc. What is there to shut down with this monument?

My guess is they want to prevent vandalism as there is no one to clean it up. I'm pretty sure it would look a lot worse if the monuments got defaced or covered in graffiti while there was nobody employed to maintain them than just closing them off.

My guess is that the decision had to do with police responsibilities. The National Park Service polices the monuments, the Capitol Police the other areas. The Capitol Police and the NPS are all Feds, but, the Capitol Police are all considered "essential" and are working (for IOUs), while the NPS is mostly considered non-essential. The "Anti-Deficiency Act" could be amended at any time, but, it is still in effect. The current way of handling it is relatively new, though. Jimmy Carter's Attorney General Benjamin Civiletti is the one who set the precedent for how this is being handled.
