Does that mean you cant rent them from the AppleTV or you can't stream them from a computer to AppleTV or both?

I read in another thread that the differences in hardware make it impossible, but I don't know that for a fact...just what I read...but otherwise, why not do it?:(

Thats BS. There is no reason they can't simply adjust payment methods to accomplish it. The ATV 1st Gen is already capable of movie rentals...no reason it couldn't handle TV rentals as well.

I could see that being a valid reason for no netflix...but lack of .99 tv shows is simply a slap in the face by Apple.

Two reasons they could have done this:

1. To make you buy the 2nd gen.
2. Because (to my knowledge) the 1st gen only has 802.11g so streaming might be slower if you want to watch it faster, whereas a movie you can wait because it's longer...

I just downloaded the pilot episode of Scrubs S1 for .99 but it won't let me download it to the AppleTV (gen1).

Awesome.

IMO there's a third reason, which is probably the correct explanation:

3. Hardware incompatibility. The old Apple TV can only do 720p 24fps, while the new Apple TV can do 720p 30fps. A lot of TV is video based, and so is 30fps.

Any television show you purchase in the store now works fine and dandy. I'm sure there's no file format differences between a tv show from iTunes that you own or rent.

Does this mean that my videos I encoded to work on gen 1 :apple:TV won't work on gen 2?

If you can't sync it to the AppleTV, can you stream it from iTunes? I've never tried that, not sure if it would work normally or if it defeats the purpose of Apple's rental scheme.

All it would require is a firmware update just like the iPhone and iPad. Apparently, they’re absolutely done working on the first generation Apple TV.
