No icloud sync with data cable?

Hi

So I only use the data cable connected to my iMac to charge my iPad which I'm happy with. But it seems that for syncing with iCloud the data cable doesn't count as a charging device. Is there a way around this or I do i have to continue to do manual iCloud syncs (which kind of makes iCloud unnecessary...)?
