The project I am currently involves me studying a particular area and I would like to show particular areas of interest on a map by sort of over-laying a square box over that area, but that is transparent so that you can still see what area is being studied.

    How do I do this?

I know what I want but have no clue on how to get to it. As I am sure you have realized graphics is not my thing!

    Thanks,
    Paul

Do you have photoshop?? If you do, it's pretty easy...

EDIT: Here you go, I've done a sample. Was this what you were thinking of??

If you click on the shape tool and on the top toolbar there is a button that says transparency, click on it and set it to about 40%. Apply it over your map and... TA-DA!!! Done.
