Open Office 1.1.1 has finally been released for OS X (10.2.X or greater). It is only available as a source tarball, but the site promises binaries with a GUI installer soon (this week). You can find it here.

That's really good news! Once OO runs natively in Mac OS X, it will be a serious competitor for MS Office. In certain respects, it's already surpassed MS Office.

ok.... so is it going to be an actual 'NATIVE' app? or just an easy way to run it in X11? (sorry if that seems like a dumb question, just can't seem to tell from the site)

It is still run under X11. Work will not begin on a Cocoa based OpenOffice until version 2.0, which may be as early as late 2005. Though X11 based, it is free and it is a very capable replacement for Office. To all those who haven't given it a try I would recommend doing so before buying Office. It is also available for Windows, Linux and Solaris.

I'll download when I get home.

I am sooo close to buying M$Office for Mac, so any reason not to is fine by me.

I should probably try out OpenOffice or a derivative thereof (like the Java version, which I can't remember the name of) on my iMac. I don't want to use M$ Office either, but I could use something more capable than AppleWorks.

an osx native version of abiword was released about a week ago. it's still pretty buggy, but it's well worth a look.

p.s. the native version is a 2.1.1 dev version available here
