Well, here in Chicago, I finally saw some PS3s. In other posts, people are showing piles of PS3 at places, but here they are still pretty scarce.

The Bestbuys I were at had none.

The Targets I were at, one had 1 60 Gig model, and another had a 20 Gig Model. The 20 Gig Model had been opened.

The salesperson said that it's new, but I said it had been opened and wanted an "Open Box price". He said that it's new and they open them upon return to make sure they work and are complete.

For me, an open box is an open box (especially at that price). Plus, what's to stop someone else from going in there and taking parts out? Also, how do I know it's not someone else's return and they had actually used it?

If anything around here, only returns are popping up, they've mostly all been opened, and they are selling them as new...

I think this whole PS3 thing's a mess. Needless to say, I preordered my Wii and got one on launch, and there are stores getting Wii's in, but they are selling out quickly. Seems like Microsoft and Nintendo are the ones who have their act together right now...

Yeah thats pretty messed up. Ask to talk to a manager, or make sure the one you are buying is new.

I agree, and that's why I thought it was stupid that they opened my return even though it had obviously not been opened. Now they either have to sell it at an open-box price for no reason, or annoy whoever is buying it by charging full-price for an open box.

Don't get me wrong, I played Resistance on the PS3 and its a great game/graphics were good but I would so rather have the Wii.

    High Expectations...

Yea, at $499 and $599 pricepoints, the expectations of a system are pretty high, so the games BETTER be good!

I remember when the 3DO came out at a whopping $699. The expectations matched, so when most of the games were lame full motion video sequences, the system quickly died...

Well, it is the cheapest Blu-Ray player right now. That's one good thing.

I actually sold my Wii, and am enjoying the PS3 much more.
Dont' get me wrong: I will buy a Wii again sometime in the spring....maybe a black or blue one.
    (to play mario galaxies)

But, the difference in game prices is only $10. Thats negligible.
Startup prices will drop(for every system), but the PS3 requires the least amount of accessories.

I spent just as much on both console purchases(roughly $700)
Only difference is....I got a couple extra games(for the Wii) that I ended up not enjoying.

BOTH are lacking in games, but that will all change this year.

Oh, I fully plan on buying another one later. My return had nothing to do with not wanting a PS3, and everything to do with my brother not having the money afterall, and my anticipated need for money for post-Macworld purchases.

How in the world did you manage to spend $700 for a Wii system? Sounds like you paid PS3 prices...

Well here is how it worked out for mine (Tax is included in prices)

    Wii System = $270
    7 Games = $378
    3 Controllers =$130
    3 nunchucks = $65
    2GB SD Card= $28
    Wii Points = $30
    Nintendo Component Cables = $39
    Total = $940

It's pretty easy to break the $700 mark as you can see :)

    For Comparisons sake

    PS3 System = $646
    4 Games = $248
    BT Bluray/DVD Remote= $28
    HDMI/Optical Audio Cables = $34
    Total = $956

I spent about equal for both systems just as Coded-Dude did :D
