How would one going about opening a file compressed in toast on a machine without toast? Because my friend sent me a file but he put it .toast format.

Hmm, DiskImageMounter (the "invisible" helper included with OS X) can usually open Toast images, but you mention that it's compressed which might stop it from working :(

Try right-clicking the file and select to open it with DiskImageMounter, and see what happens.
