My Aunt just got a new iMac 17" and I've set it up, it's running beautifully. However she has a buch of stuff on her old iMac running OS 8.5 that we have to transfer. I stuck my USB thumb drive in to a spare slot but it doesn't show up on the screen, the System Profiler see's it, it just doesn't seem to be supported by 8.5. If I upgrade the OS to 9.1 will the thumb drive appear on the desktop and let me drop stuff in it? Anyone?
    Cheers.

You may need to install a driver or a firmware update on the old iMac. OS8 would use the USB ports quite happily, but most hardware required an extension. What's the make of the USB key?

Although if it's the firmware, try this. You may find that it recognises the USB key after you install it.

Hi, thanks for the quick reply.

    It's Cruzer drive.
Thanks for the link, I'll download it to the old iMac and see if that helps, I'll let you know how I get on.

    best regards.

The Cruzer ones show on retail sites as requiring OS9.1 sadly, so I'm not sure whether it's going to work. However, as both iMacs have an ethernet port, you should be able to cable them together if the USB key is a no go. Turn on Personal File Sharing on the new iMac (in System Prefs>>Sharing panel) and use the Chooser on the old iMac to connect to it.

Brilliant, thanks so much for the info, it's so long since I used OS 9 I've forgotten it all. Is it definitely the Chooser for file sharing, I would have thought it would be via the file sharing box in the control strip which was always a pain to get working as I recall. Anyway, I'll give it all a try and let you know.
    Thanks again for your help.
