I use a iMac 700 with Office 2001 loaded on OS9 and Microsoft X on OSX. They have both worked well indendantly on each operating system BUT all of a sudden when you click on an Office file in OS9 it tries to open it in OSX 10.15 and the only way to open that file is to open Office 2001 in Word/Excel/Powerpoint etc go to files then open and locate the original file...it seems to be a longwinded way to open a file.
What can I do about it??.....is it a preference that is wrong??
    Any suggestions?

In Mac OS 9 a file is recognized by its "type and creator".
By default, the file will be opened by the newest version of the application judged to be the creator. Just an example: A Word 98-document (WRD8) willl be opened by the newest version of Word found on the disk. So if you have both Office 98 AND Office 2001 installed on your Mac, it will try to open Word 2001 anyway.
    In your case it's wierd...
AFAIK, Word X "looks" Carbon, but isn't. MS has made some adjustments to the apps in Office X, to make 'em a) impossible to run in OS 9, and b) impossible to modify a couple of things, like "language".
The trouble is, does your Mac "see" Word X as the newest version of Word on your computer? Could be!
This kind of information is stored in the volume's "Desktop DB and DF". You can update this (the type-creator thing) by rebuilding your desktop.
So if you have installed OS 9 and OS X on different drives, or partitions, you can unmount the OS X partition and rebuild the desktop of your OS 9 partition or drive....
Otherwise I can try it at work. I'll have to wait to monday for that.

Control-click on a word document and select get info from the menu(or click on it and use command-I). There should be an option called "open with". Select Word X. Then at the bottom, of the Info window, there will be an button called "Change All...". Click it, and then click OK if it asks you if you are sure. Voila! All of your Word docs will open w/ Word X.

If I read correctly, I believe he had the other problem - running OS9 and the system by default would try to open Office X. In which case, the get info, open with will not work (OS X.2 only). I would do a versiontracker search for a utility to fix file associations.

Oops, my mistake about the OS9/X thing. However, OS X 10.1.5 does have the open with feature.
