With all this perpetual talk about expandability, and dozens of extra slots on the spiffy new mac pro, I found my imagination falling short in imagining exactly what one might stick in there, besides graphics cards, and more USB/firewire.

I hear that there are sound cards which expand your audio possibilities, and some graphics cards give you extra connections, but beyond these fairly simple cards, which only supplement the machine's already capable abilities, what is there PCI wise that actually adds a lot of new functionality?

It all seems like a few more ports, or a different connection type. Is expandability all it's cracked up to be?

P.S. I often found myself wishing my powerbook was more expandable, but that was because of USB 1.0, not owning a fast CF reader, and a limited number of ports. Also, the HD bays are nice, but I'm asking about PCI-Express cards.

Well you have SCSI controllers, TV Tuners, wireless cards, adapters... well to me expandability means being able to switch out components at will, not having a PCI card that makes you breakfast...

The biggest point about expandability is the ability to install better graphics cards. The point about the new Mac Pros is they have everything you could want but can also have the graphics upgraded by a good graphics card in four years time, can have a Blu-Ray/HD-DVD drive put in, can be upgraded to a silly amount of memory, can have faster processors put in and if they invent USB 3.0, Firewire 1600 or SATA 300 then upgrade cards can be put in the PCIe slots.

The biggest thing the Mac Pros give us that the other Macs don't though, is the option of better graphics cards when we want.

OK... Maybee it was just me, but it seemed as though these slots were all hyped as though there were a toast and jam dispensing PCI-Express card, now with more juice choices!

well for one, I will be happy when a Mac compatable PCI Express audio/midi I/O card comes out, as I would like something other than a firewire I/O for my audio set up, can find lots of PCI cards, but not much in the way of PCI Express (yet)

EDIT: I'll add that I also want a break out box to go with that card.

Is there any serial PCI cards? I have several older devices like my basic stamp 2 microcontroller made by parallax that is serial. Also serial ports are easier to program for (so I have read)...

Well, all PCI Express cards are serial! :D

But I assume you mean more like this, or this, or this. (Just did a Google search for "PCI Express RS-232.")
