Hooray, more encouraging news that anti-gay bigotry is receding in our society!

    My bold.

Oh- that's actually nothing new. They've had it on their list of mental disorders for sometime. I believe they even give it a fancy name: "narcissistic personality disorder". At least I think that's how it was referred to on one of my friend's discharge papers about 20 years ago, but I could be wrong.

Shouldn't it be classed as a "lifestyle disorder"?

It's always struck me as ironic that the army, with all its closeted manly camaraderie, and taking as its ultimate rôle-models the famously bisexual Spartans, has always had such a dishonest attitude to homosexuality. I have a sneaking suspicion that it's always insecurity about one's own sexual identity or orientation which drives these irrational and self-denying policies. What did all those generals get up to in the Academy in their younger days?

I wonder if the "Pentagon document" is simply an out-of-date one leftover from years past, and more of an indication that nobody has reviewed it for decades rather than an indicator of current policy. I don't know one way or the other, but it seems like the first question to ask before people get in an uproar claiming it reflects policy.

By the way, did anybody get the same ad I did and find the unintentional juxtaposition humorous?

    eek, that's terrible.

It completely baffles me how someone can go so far as to try and degrade people who have done nothing against them.

That's funny, look at how prosperous the Gay community has become. Undoubtedly, a lot of them are wealthy, intelligent, law-obiding citizens. I'd like to see the crime rate in the Gay population, you know, how they claissify blacks and whites and mexicans and what not. I bet it isn't even a fraction.

Maybe gay people are really the SANE ones, and the rest of us are all ****ed up?

Didn't the Reagan era end YEARS ago?!

Unfortunately there are a lot of people out there whose minds cannot be changed.

Even more unfortunate is that there seems to be an overwhelming trend of these types of people in all-too-powerful positions.

As if a "choice" is a better label than a "mental disorder". :(

Why is this issue of being Gay an issue at all?

make you wonder if thats the mindset of the people in power in the US and the world over then i think we are all in a whole lot of trouble.

    And the rest?

Actually thinking about it, "don't ask, don't tell"  :D

Back on topic, the Pentagon's document doesn't surprise me. An organisation that large is going to have it's fair share of idiots and nutjobs, and occasionally they put things into writing that people with more sense are too busy to pick up on.

Narcissistic Personality Disorder is a legitimate diagnosis... but I don't know of any data that suggests either that most people with NPD are gay or that most gay people have NPD. It has its own criteria, and if it's being used as a back door to classify homosexuals, that just isn't right.... :(

I think they're confusing "homosexuality" with "puritan, judgmental conservatism".
