What is up with them?????? Is this all about boys playing games and making money while doing so? If so, then they need to get the heck out of there and someone with some common sense put in their place.

The idea of conflicts of interest is rearing its ugly head.

Let's see how this might work...

I put 50 million dollars on Arafat's head. I pay a group of Palestinians half to kill him.

Or it could just as easily work in reverse.

Or is DARPA hoping that those "in-the-know" will be unable to refrain from cashing in on a sure thing and use it to track down investors with terrorist connections?

i had to read the article twice when i first saw it earlier today...i just couldn't believe it.

the pentagon's plan is offensive on so many levels.

it figures they'd find another way to make global unrest into a profitable industry...

maybe the gov't will realize the merchandising potential and sell t-shirts that say:

    Guess the Death Toll (front)
    Win Valuable Prizes (back)

    - or -

My Dad Died In a Terrorist Attack and all the Government Gave Me is this Lousy T-shirt

    - or -

Arafat Chance He'll Live To See Another Ramadan

This must be some sort of sick, evil prank. Or I'm asleep and having a terrible nightmare. Admiral Poindexter, why are you smiling like that? Admiral?

Nooooooo..... it can't be! Dr. Strangelove... he's... he's -- REAL!

Always knew there were zealots in the administration that thought "market forces" were the answer to everything, but I never could've dreamed this one up in my wildest nightmare.

Oops! I see IJ Reilly's having that nightmare for me.

Bush's administration have obviously lost the plot to the point where they are now a serious threat to world stability.

    Time for regime change ;)

What's even more peculiar about this story is the money the government has thrown at this project -- over a half million already, and several millions more in expenditures planned in coming years. Leave it to the Pentagon to run a casino that loses money!

Conceptually, a futures market on events is not a bad idea, but for terrorism? Nuts.

DARPA = a great idea. The promote a lot of things, including chip design research.

Aw, look at it this way: You'd have all manner of folks hunting for information on terrorists in order to know what to predict, or when. They'd be financing their own efforts. The big problem, with so much information flowing in all directions, is sorting out the rational from the idiotic. (Don't we already have that?)

I mean, it's sorta like the Mall Rats, spending their own money on video arcade games, learning how to fire from an Abrams tank or manipulate other real-world fire control machinery.

Overall, it might even save tax dollars!

And maybeso some percentage of the terrorist types would get discouraged...

    :), 'Rat
