    I'm a graduate student and I'm trying to keep all of my experiment notes and results well organized. Right now my folder hierarchy is as follows:
    2012
    ->Project 1
    -->milestone 1
    --->03.12.2012 experiment name.doc
    --->03.13.2012 experiment name.doc
    --->03.14.2012 experiment name.doc
    --->03.15.2012 experiment name.doc
    -->milestone 2
    --->03.12.2012 experiment name.doc
    --->03.13.2012 experiment name.doc
    --->03.14.2012 experiment name.doc
    --->03.15.2012 experiment name.doc
    ->Project 2... etc.

    This seems to work relatively well for keeping everything organized. However, it would be great if I could have a more visual summary of what I've done in order to quickly scan through.

    I was wondering if it would be possible to set up some kind of script that would go through every file within the 2012 top directory, extract the date from the file name and create a new calendar entry in my research calendar in iCal. I could then look at my calendar for march and see on each day all of the experiments that I did.

    If someone can point me in the right direction or help me out, I would greatly appreciate it. Ideally, it would update nightly, but would there be a problem with lots of duplicate entries or would there be a way to only add a file once?
    Thanks

    Automator.app might be able to handle this without any code. It's in your application's folder.
