I just installed Plex (started with the latest 0.8.2, got the crash, then uninstalled and installed 0.7.15). Both version crash every time I select a movie. All of my movies are in VIDEO_TS folders on an external Drobo. I created a separate folder for testing with only a few movies, and set the folder names according to the Plex documentation (using IMDB titles) and all titles scraped correctly and show the image, plot info, etc. However, when I go to Watch Movies and select a movie to watch (using the enter key) Plex immediately crashes to the desktop. Is this a known issue with SL? I'm on 10.6.1 if that matters.

I just tried installing Plex 0.7.15 on Leopard and got the same crash whenever I try to play a movie, so I guess SL is not the problem.

Another update - Plex crashes whether I play the VIDEO_TS from Movies (library mode) or Videos (file browser mode). However all of these VIDEO_TS movies play fine in Mac DVD Player.

I don't have any video_ts folders to speak of - all my movies are ripped into mp4 format. Worst comes to worst - you can always queue up all of your movies in Handbrake and have at it...

If you haven't already - head over to forums.plexapp.com and sign up. You'll find plenty of helpful coves over there.

Plex is a fantastic app - stick with it!

I found that if I convert that same VIDEO_TS folder to am MKV (using Make MKV) it plays perfectly. And if I name it the same as I had named the VIDEO_TS it also scrapes the same information. If I use MKV can I use a full directory structure? I haven't seen any way so far to select genres in Plex (but I expect there is a way); all VIDEO_TS folders had to be at the root level for the scraper to work correctly.

Also, I had already registered at the plex forums, posted a couple of posts, and still have received no replies at all. The forum seems to be pretty dead so far.

Agreed on the dead front - that forum seems to go in spurts. Try using the search function over there or failing that - get some crash logs and bump your threads up with them.

I've never looked for any genre in Plex so can't tell you if that's in there or not. However, you could always add separate sources by genre in your videos section - then you'd be able to browse into each genre and have the scraper pick up the info for you as well as through the movies section with the whole bunch.

For the mkv files - yes you can use the same directory structure. Plex can either scrape from the filename or the folder name - you select that in the set content sub-menu.

So what do people do with large libraries? It sounds like the library mode in the movies section is just a flat collection of all of your movies, which could get quite unwieldy for a large collection. at least :apple:TV has 'browse by genre'.

There really isn't any Plex support for 10.6 right now. It has a lot of issues. You're better off down grading to 10.5 if the mac is only running Plex.

On the main menu, select Movies and hit right on the remote, you can then choose by genre, actor, director etc.

Thanks for that - I'd seen it before but couldn't remember how to get there :)

Does the scraper tag the movies or do we need to put them in genre folders to make this work?

The scrapper will tag the movies for you, according to the genre they are in on the scrapper site you choose.

Check the Plex Wiki for more info on using Video_TS folders, there may be something in there.

Has ANYBODY had any luck playing VIDEO_TS folders? I have tried with 7.15, 8.1, and 8.2 on both Leopard and Snow Leopard with absolutely no luck whatsoever. This is so frustrating! If DVD Player and Front Row have no problem with VIDEO_TS folders, why does Plex always crash? I don't really relish going to all the effort to convert all of my videos to a different format, even if it just an MKV. Given the size of my library that would take quite some time.

Is there any way to force Plex (or Boxee or XBMC) to use the Mac's DVD Player app when playing files? DVD Player and Front Row never seem to have any issues.

I use Plex .8.2 with snow leopard. 95% of my collection are ripped video_ts folders (about 300 movies). About 10% of my movies wont play at all (have to switch to frontrow to play them)...but the others play fine in Plex. I have everything named and organized correctly so they scrape properly.

No crashing for me. There are issues with Plex and SL though, remote has problems and there are issues with Plex passing AC3 audio to my receiver. There are workarounds available currently, but they aren't fixed completely yet.

The Plex forums are nice, but the best way to get help is to search the old posts. Most questions have already been asked and its easy to find solutions. The plex wiki is also an invaluable resource.

I also have about 95% of my movies as TS folders.(approx. 120). I have not had a single problem with Plex crashing. When I went to SL I did have the problem of the movie freezing and no audio but the Plex forums have a workaround for that and that issue is now fixed.
Since all your movies scraped correctly I am assuming that your file structure is correct. Could you post a screen shot of your directory?
I'll look over my Plex settings when I get home and see if anything stands out.

According to what I have read on the Plex forums it seems that the problem is only in Movie mode where Plex picks the wrong file to play (for example VTS_04_0.VOB instead of VIDEO_TS.IFO); supposedly browsing directly to the folder and selecting the proper file works (but I haven't tried that on all of the movies, only 1 or 2 and it does seem to work that way). Here is a snippet of my library:
