So I should have picked up on it being very slow to load and respond when writing or deleting files last week. This morning it suddenly died/unmounted in the middle of a transfer and now gives the error message about being uninitialized. The drive is just dead right? Fortunately, the drive only contained backed up media files anyway.

Probably time for me to stop buying the bestbuy/amazon BF type deal drives and invest in something more dependable? Transcend and now PNY...are patriot sandisk actually any better over the long term?

Always a day away
Sounds like this might have been one of those "fake" 256 Gb drives that's actually more like an 8 Gb that's been jimmied with to appear bigger.

well it worked fine up until a couple weeks ago maybe where I noticed it didn't seem to mount as quickly as it did before. I've had it filled to 240gb so I don't think thats the issue.
