When connected via the 3-pin plug, the power adapter runs significantly cooler than when connected with the default 2-pin plug

    I've noticed that too.

Does yours spark every time you plug it into the wall with the 3-prong, or is it just the questionable wiring in my house?

I can second that. Just thought it was winter and being dry. To go along with the winter/dry thing, I carry alot of static around with me. I have shocked my MBP several times and been freaked out about it. But everytime it just keeps on working like everything is normal. The power supply/adapter does a very good job of shielding!
