I have a powerbook 15" 1.67ghz model (the one before the hd lcd's; got it around august 05) and it will not burn Dual Layer dvds. I know that the model is not supposed too but after doing a little research i found that the drive model: MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E, was a quite release into my version of powerbook. I am pretty sure that this superdrive has the capabilities to burn Dual Layer Dvd's but from more research i have found that this has been locked out by apple because they didn't want to upset those who got a powerbook without this drive(because it was a quite release).

this is what is says in system profiler:
MATSHITA DVD-R UJ-845E:

Firmware Revision: DMP2
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipped/Supported)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
DVD-Write: -R, -RW, +R, +RW
Burn Underrun Protection CD: Yes
Burn Underrun Protection DVD: Yes
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, DVD-DAO
Media: No

I was wondering if anyone knew away around of what i think to be a firmware issue or does my drive just not burn DL DVD's. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a 12" PB and I stuck a Panasonic version of that drive in it, and it burns DL DVDs. It has the same model number except it is not a Matsu.
