    -1399 refurb

    -PowerMac G4 1.8ghz(1x)/512/160gb/SuperDrive- 1699 refurb

    -PowerBook G4 12" 1.33ghz/512/60gb/SuperDrive- 1699 new
    (1599+100ram)

    -PowerBook G4 15" 1ghz/512/60gb/Combo- 1699 refurb
    (1599+100ram)

I would rule out the G4 tower, but remember that the towers don't come with monitors. That said, I would consider how important portability is. A dual 2.0 Ghz tower is 3-4 times faster than even a new 1.5 Ghz laptop, so I'd guess that the tower is going to be in the neighborhood of twice as fast. Unless you need portability, go for the tower.

powermac G5 1.8Ghz is probably the best bang for the buck, you get a bigger HD more ram, faster bus, better pci slots more ram slots over the 1.6Ghz

If your pricing range is $1699 keep in mind that you still need to buy a monitor if you don't get a PB, that said shy away from the 1ghz pb its way to slow, spend your money on speed.

Here. Although, I guess it's really closer to 2-3 times faster. Still quite a gap, yes?

    G5 tower - don't get a G4 if you want something new.
15" PB - extra screen space outweighs the "slightly" better specs of the 12"

If you are looking at a PowerMac, get the SP 1.8 G5 the extra 2 pairs of DIMMs is two more memory upgrades you can make before you start tossing DIMMs.

That alone is worth $100, otherwise you'll upgrade the memory once then toss DIMMs every time after that.

The PCI vs. PCI-X debate is moot, since they will both require 3.3V cards.

    ---

And there's nothing that says you "have" to buy a new monitor if you're happy with the one you are using.
