One of my dads businesses computers is totally jammed. I've not used it and so don't know exactly what OS it's running except for the fact that it's OS 9.

When the computer is booted up, it gets to the grey screen with the small small circle towards the bottom of the screen (that circles round and round) and then displays the following message at the top of the screen:

/etc/master.passwd: No Such File or Directory

/etc/master.passwd: No Such File or Directory

    sh-2.05a#

It doesn't appear to be a hardware problem, as I was able to connect my Powerbook to the PowerMac via a firewire cable to retrieve all data stored on the computer.

Any ideas on how to sort this problem out?

I have all of the relevant CD's that came with the computer, but may choose to take this chance to install Panther.

Inserting the original CD's does nothing - I hear them spin for approx 30 seconds, but that's all.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated! :)

    Andy.

If you're getting errors like that, then you're running OS X, not 9.

Edit: Just looked at the article you linked to, and you're right, it is due to OS 9. But OS X is also installed on the computer.
