I'm buying my first mac in the very near future. My question is, can powerpoint presentations be viewed on a mac without installing office?

I'm on a windows machine now which doesn't have powerpoint installed and it won't even let me view the presentation  . This is only important as lecture notes for my university course are only available as powerpoint presentations..

If you dont want to get Office, you can get iWork, which will work. But if you dont pay any money there is some sort of free alteneritive to office, but I forget what its called

Most people find Microsoft Word better than Pages, but an overwhelming amount of people think Keynote is WAY WAY better than PowerPoint.

iWork isn't free, I think its $69. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

EDIT: this was in reference to what d wade asked.

I should have been more clear.

I would just like to know if my new mac (when I get it) will be able to display the PP without me needing to install office?

I do not wish to create PP, just display it as my lecture notes are only available to download as PP.

OpenOffice/NeoOffice, free alternatives to Mac:Office, should be able to open and also edit them.

Unless I'm mistaken, you need to run open office under x11, which most people feel odd doing.

S.O.T.: I like powerpoint's features, and the palette but simple things like making text boxes is funky. Re-ajusting things is a pain too.

Then get NeoOffice, which I have seen a lot of threads about lately. It's not that great of a program, but it is free so give it a shot.

South Mississippi y'all, near the water!
There should also be a Powerpoint viewer for Mac on the Microsoft support site.

    This is what I found.
