i have been having trouble installing mac os 9 because of an issue with firmware. i boot from cd and get os 9 running. i try to install the os from the cd. when i double click on the icon, i get an error stating that my firmware is out of date and to update it from a "CD extras" folder on the disk. i cannot find this folder at all. what should i do? (i am using an iMac 233)

Yes, OS 9 and higher require some firmware updates on the OS 9 CD (in "CD Extras:Firmware Updates") before you can the installer.
The problem is that you need to startup from the HD before you can execute the firmware updates.
So, try to get OS 8.6 or lower (whatever came with the iMac), installed on the internal drive and boot from it. Then you can insert the Mac OS 9 CD, apply the firmware updaters from the CD (you'll be needing a paperclip for that), and then you can finally boot from the CD, erase the disk (Mac OS Extended), and install Mac OS 9.
Be sure to update it to Mac OS 9.1, (or even better 9.2.2) as these updates (free) are quite essential.
    Good luck.
