I have developed a game that has an online high score list ( http://lavacat.com ). Now I have run in to the problem of dealing with profanity, and profanity filtering for this high-score list.

First question: Is "eatme" an offending nickname?
Second question: Anyone know about some good profanity filter word lists that I can download?

eatme isn't very offensive. As for a profanity list. I remember once looking at the msn messenger list. I forget where it was though

Maybe the mods here will let you take a peek at their list?

I don't think the MacRumors list would do you any good. It's got the usual 4-letter words, plus some freethis and freethat URLs. That's not quite what you want. I think if you start with the obvious ones and add more from time to time as you run into them, you'll be off to a better start.

Thanks for the replies. I think it will probably work out well if I just check the high score list regularly and add words to the profanity filter as I go along. It will hopefully not be a problem at all, especially since we're talking about people who play solitaire ;)

I guess I overestimated the word filter here...

    Oh well.
