The economist has reported that the upcoming PS3 may contain 4 cell microprocessors. Given the theoretical power of these new chips, this pegs the PS3 at a maximum of 1000GFlops. That's right. 1000GFlops!!!!

This would put the Sony PS3 at number 400 on the top500 supercomputer list. This is amazing. If the thing only runs at 1/10th what Sony claims, the PS3 will still be 5 times faster than the fastest thing on the market today. (The fastest commercial chip available runs at about 20GFlops)

I hope this Sony/IBM/Apple deal gets these Cell chips in the PowerMac soon. Thoughts???

Dozens of threads have gone over this topic. They aren't actually in the Gaming Forum, but you'll find in the Hardware and Community Discussion sections and even in the News and Rumors sections.

Somehow, i find all of that hype. I believe it will be insanely fast. But not even close to what they are describing. I *will* eat my words if I am wrong.
