Resistance: Fall of Man will take up 22 gigs on a blu-ray disc for the PS3.

"While the music and vocals in "Resistance" take up only about 1 Gigabyte of disc space, graphics, level data and programming code occupy most of the remaining 21.

"We're going to fit more on a Blu-Ray disc than you could on an HD DVD," he said, referring to the competing format, which in its most basic discs can't hold more than 15 GB. More numbers: 40-player online matches at launch; 60 levels of player progression while playing online; two-player offline co-op. Phillips promised better, deeper support than any Xbox Live launch title."

Well, looks like PS3's Blu-ray capabilities are really going to benefit the games with more spcae for high-res textures, music, and most importantly Gamplay. Resistance is rumoured to have over 60 level put into that 22 gigs...DVD9 look out!

I will be getting this game as its the only ps3 launch title that interests me, but 22gb ? sorry not convinced, I just find it a bit too convienant marketing 'spin''.... Oh here's justification for BluRay - see it is better

+ 1 important fact - it was reported on MTV News... please since when were they ever acurate and the intelligent source of factual news  its a BS marketing spin from the masters Sony attacking both Microsoft & HD-DVD and using the same TV channel that launched the 360.. Its so patently obvious.

Regardless of that, the game does look v.promising.

    gravy

if thats all true then its my number one to-buy launch title! Well it was anyway! :D

I am wondering if with the new hardware game developers can finally use high resolution textures because I am damn tired of low res textures :(

Oooo! "motion-sensing functions will allow you to rifle butt aliens by jabbing out one side of the PS3 controller" that would be sweet, no melee button needed

exactly what it sounds like to me too.

Know what it sounds like to me? sloppy coding. I've never seen a game need that much space. unless this game is supergrandepic, but seeing it's only a launch title I'm a little... hmmm... launch titles (barring Twilight Princess, an up-port anyways) are normally little things. and with that in mind it looks as though this dev company (silly londoners) are just rushed this out without optimising.

or are we back in FMV land? 1080p FMV's would take up a lot of space.

as a developer I cannot see where that 22gb has gone. maybe obscene amounts of megatextures? enough to span a small country seemingly.

well that answers that. 21gb for graphics? amazing when you consider HL2 has high resolution textures yet the entire game is 4gb, including the very expansive physics engine. I doubt Crysis (which is generations beyond this game) is to exceed 9gb.

1gb for audio... poor audio :p

1gb Audio - but where does it mention FMV ? I imagine it's included in 'graphics' part of that statement.

I imagine there will be 1080p / 1080i / 720p/ 480p / SD versions of the same video files thrown in there, and that 'might' explain the size.

As you say, there is no chance level textures could feasibly use up 21 gb.

no way HL2 has high res textures. Download the high res character pack and the difference between the characters and their environment is noticable.

however, the texture pack is 276.4mb JUST for "Alyx, Barney, Dr. Breen, and Father Grigori, as well as for various props and models throughout", so a whole game of stuff maybe?

Well doom 3 extreme quality on pc uses hi-res uncompressed textures and installed it only uses around 4gb so ??????

unless every single item has it's own high res texture that is never duplicated (which 1 look at a screen shot tells you this is not the case, or the link the HD movie i posted a day or two ago) it's still a dodgy sounding number...

how come no other developers have storage issues with 360 / ps3 joint development like rainbow 6 : vegas which is looking equally as impressive as R:FOM

It smells fishy, and when somthing smells that fishy, its usually a red herring.

I'm 100% still buying this game though, and will remain skeptical about the claim :)

And if by November releases, it seems that ps3 versions are better than the 360 equivalent : such as splinter cell or rainbow six, then i'll pick them up on it instead, but I'm not convinced by this marketing bs............

lol I dunno! I'm just trying to figure it out, I doubt the developer would just lie about it...

No but Sony would, they have a history of doing so, especially when they have a new machine coming out....

(Remember Ready 2 Rumble 2 ? A game sony proclaimed would be massivly different and improved on the ps2 over the dreamcast release, featuring better graphics and sound because it was on a DVD rather than CD like the dreamcast... only thing is - the games were identical except the dreamcast version could be played at higher res via the vga adapter and hence looked better) It was Sony Marketing BS.

added that to the choice of who is carrying the news MTV ? odd to say the least...

As i said in post 2

Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me......

Perhaps they're using absolutely no compression? Might make loading faster (no decompression needed)...and filesize a bazillion times larger. If they throw all the textures on there at maximum resolution and completely uncompressed...it might result in a ballooning filesize and a minor, neglible visual improvement noticeable if you walk right up to a wall in 1080i.

    And maybe uncompressed 1080p FMVs?

As i said Doom 3 on extreme uses NO texture compression but still only 4gb
and was only recommended for graphics cards with 512mb or dedicated ram

PS3 for reasons outlined in the other thread has 256, it would fill it's texture banks straight up, meaning levels would be shorter in order to facilitate the reloading of textures into memory. Might explain the 60 level claim... Even if it did use up slower memory from the system it would not leave enough ram to power those textures and drive the data through the processor and back....

But again I point to the post I made a day or two ago which i raved about this game. With the latest screen shots. Look at the floor textures, look at the enimies, which are just same enemys ad'repetum.

22GB for one game? That MUST mean I should buy a PS3 instead of a Wii... because EVERYBODY knows that it's the size of the game that makes it worth playing, not gameplay or innovation.

a lot of space could be for language? because the games are all region free. the levels must be enormous with everything destructable. I don't think Sony said this but Insomniac did.

i was talking about Insomniac saying the game was 22GB, for some reason my edit doesn't work.

Ironically, HD-DVD currently offers MORE storage. The first-gen Blu-ray players apparently can't run the dual-layer disks...
    http://www.thedigitalbits.com/#mytwocents

Meanwhile HD-DVD players will play dual-layer 30 GB disks, which is more than a 1 layer 25 GB Blu-ray.

WHAT??? Seriously this is bad. So what happens with the PS3? Is that a drive that can't read a DL disc, meaning that in the 'possible' future should BluRay movies survive that long - we wont be able to play them making BluRay playback totally redundant

This is worrying, and I dont want to spend 625 Euro on a console that in 6 months is going to be surpassed by a ps3 with a fully working drive....

well yes. unless the system has been in development with kits to actual studios then don't expect anything grand as a launch title. unless it was something like Star Fox Adventures (originally developed as another game on the N64) or Twilight Princess (in the making for 4 years on the Cube). I would love to see a studio push out a truly grand game in 2 years, especially with HD textures and everything needed for a game now. the average time now its 3-4 years.

ps. Crysis. as we can all put to rest now takes up 6gb. not 22gb

Nope. audio is 1gb, the rest are graphics and levels. :) 1gb for all languages? must be a fairly talk-free game or be stuffed with badly compressed sounds. or perhaps (probably the best option for the PS3) have the more common languages on disc and offer other options available as free downloads?

    Sony-style money making.
so HD-DVD can hold more than BluRay despite what Sony are saying? gotta love their marketing guys. the cycle continues again :)
