July 22nd will come and pass with no cheaper Macs.

Ditto. The savings will be passed on to Apple not the customer.

I remember the Core Duo price drop in mid-2006. I was hoping for a minor speed bump then. We got nothing until September.

Well then... I guess my question was answered. Since I got FC Studio 2 and discovered by 3 year old PowerMac G5 wasn't powerful enough for it I've been planning on upgrading to an Mac Pro. Then I saw this article and was wondering whether or not I should hold off until July to save some money.

But if no one thinks the savings will be passed onto the consumer then I won't wait.

Intel rarely "cuts" prices either. Generally, when a new faster processor comes along, it takes up the price point, more or less, occupied by the formerly fastest processor. Only the older processors are cut in price. In the past Apple has similarly not "cut" prices, but instead offered the now more powerful Mac for the same price as the one before.

Pressure from AMD this year. Intel was set to drop the price later in Q3 2007 but Barcelona might have raised some worries.

AMD pulled the same stunt when Athlon was getting hammered by Core 2. The last drastic finally brought AMD chips to a greater performance per dollar then Intel. Then again at drastic 29-50% price drops.

What do you mean? FCS2 runs on G4s. Maybe you just need RAM and/or a video card update.
