Actually, related to this, was Quake 2 ever released for Mac? And if so, is it worth buying?

Sorry to hijack the thread :p

Or you could just download the OS X Port and play it in OS X :)

Anti-cheat updates for Quake 2 Mac?

Did a search and found this thread, so maybe someone can help me here.

When I find the list of servers and try to join it stops at the console and I get a message saying that I need: NoCheat Vers x.x, R1G2, or g2advance.

I'm assuming these are anti-cheat/hack/bot patches, which is fine by me I just want fair online multiplayer with humans... but where can I find these patches for Mac (OS X)?

Any version of Quake 2 will do - Windows or Mac. You can even try it out with the demo files. It has pretty modest requirements and runs great on my iBook 12" 1.33GHz at the highest settings. I reckon the Evolved remake probably won't, though.

Not only has there been a version of Quake 2 for Macs, there was a version for Rhapsody that came out before the Mac OS 8 version... and ran better on the same hardware. :D

I have Quake 2 installed on two systems currently... my PowerMac 8600/300 (running Mac OS X Server 1.2) and my iMac (G3/350 running Mac OS X v10.2). There has been a Mac OS X native version of Quake 2 nearly from the start of Mac OS X as I recall. And it runs on all versions of Mac OS X starting with v10.0.

There's also a recent Java version of Quake 2, which should also work on Macs, but I'm not sure.

How do you join online multiplayer? I'm using the OS X version.

I use GameRanger to find servers but then I can't get in because I need 1 of 3 different anti-cheat patches installed. Has anyone encountered this? Where can I get the patches for OS X?
