QXP Tech Support told me an update will be released this quarter...that was in Oct.

Has anyone heard differently or know if an update is going to happen soon?

I ask, because I won't load Panther until the QXP update comes out and Apple releases their 10.3.2 update. I just can't afford a loss of productivity chasing bugs.

Quark's update history has 6.1 coming out Q3 '04, 6.2 in Q2 '05. Neither of the updates will fix your specific problem and the non-backwards-compatible Quark 7 will cost you $500 to upgrade and will add poorly implemented versions of features you never wanted in the first place. Luckily, it will only be available for Windows Longhorn, which will be released to the public in 2009 as Windows Xcrement.

Thanks...three responses. The first two made me laugh out and the third had me nodding in agreement.

But seriously folks, anyone heard anything - btw, I do have ID2 and like and use it!

Quark is not bad considering all major newspapers and businesses around here still use it.

MS Word isn't that bad of a app. but WordPerfect is better.

Oh, so Windows isn't bad because 95% of the world uses it? Don't mean to attack you ITR 81, that is my "love" for Quark coming out.

Many major newspapers do continue to use Quark for two reasons. The first is it was the best program when the idea of laying out on the computer really became feasible. The second, and main reason why so many are NOT switching to Indesign are the plug-ins. A newspaper will use plug-ins to tie in editorial, other advertising layout programs/databases, classified systems, etc. to improve the workflow process. These work great under Quark 3 & 4. To move to Indesign we are talking more than just computer hardware costs and the cost of Indesign - you are talking major upgrades to editorial layout and advertising programs which can run in to the hundreds of thousands of dollars. That is why no major move to Indesign from newspapers. Design agencies on the other hand are switching because they don't have the $$$ tied up in other software that MUST intigrate seemlessly with Quark. I know there are exceptions so please don't blast me with examples, I'm speaking in general terms.

For what it is worth, I am in the professional print industry (teach and use) for over 10 years.

True. I work in a recruitment ad agency where our production department often has to pull up old designs. Of course, these were done in Quark so... We stick to Quark more out of habit. I use InDesign for projects that aren't going to be made into ads.

Changing over to Quark would be a hassle and require retraining. Production is still completely OS9 too. Quarks domination out there has little to do with it being a superior application.

    jayscheuerle,

What ad agency? I used to do a lot of recruitment ads for the Raleigh office of JWG. We used Quark extensively.

Now I'm at a larger agency as the IT Director. I'm trying to sway my Art Directors/Mechanical Artists over to InDesign before we migrate to Panther, but we're pretty entrenched in Quark here as well. My fear is that Quark will die a slow, agonizing death with no updates for future versions of OS X and we'll eventually end up making the move after having created even more Qaurk files and much frustration.

    Your thoughts?

Alstin Advertising in CC Philadelphia. Nice company. Nice people. Recruitment advertising is not the business to be in when nobody is hiring, but it is picking up.

Our Production Department is very entrenched in Quark and OS9, mostly from the angle of, if it isn't broke, don't fix it. With OSX looming for any new machine purchased, change will have to come in some fashion. If new software is being bought, I've been pushing that it's a good time to go to ID2. All we send is pdfs anyway. That department has seen so many leave that now is the opportune time to start switching. Unfortunately, the fastest machine over there is a G4 450 (there might be a dualie around), so even with the RAM maxxed out, I'm not sure that ID2 will be responsive enough in OSX for the fast-paced deadlines we face every week compared to how quick Quark 4 is in OS9.

I don't think Quark is going anywhere soon, but their base isn't growing and it's seldom passionate. It's possible that they could come out with a great version of the program, but they don't appear to want to give people what they want. Each new version they put out is minimally different from the one before. If I see ID3 is significantly faster than ID2 and less of a screen hog, I'll push even more to start switching machines over. As it is, I'm only one of two people in the company running OSX.

    Death to Quark!!!!
Quark 6 is death. Wasting time getting validation code, wasting more time getting a activation. Than come to having problem during output. I wish that everyone use ID2 instead.
