Hey fellow Maccies. I have a question. Is it possible for me to hook my Mac Mini up to my Sony receiver? It has the usual yellow/white/red jacks and a digital port. I'm not too swift with this stuff and I was just wondering if this would be possible. Thanks!

    In your head.
    OPTION 1, Digital

If you look at the Mac Mini Specs you can see it has a combined mini jack/digital ports (for input and output). If you have a TOSlink cable you will get the best audio connection between your equipment. Monster makes this TOSlink cable for about $30 U.S.. Plug one end into your Mac Mini and the other to your "digital" connection on your receiver.

    OPTION 2, Analogue

Cables like these can be found just about anywhere electronics are sold. You are basically spiting the mini/eighth inch connector into 2 RCA. Cost - about $20. U.S.

I work in a recording studio. Gold tipped connectors are nice, but not required for good audio. You audio is only as good as its weakest connection, so digital is likely the best rout for high fidelity- but if your source sucks, then even digital can't help. has a How To Turn Your Mac Mini Into A Media Center. Not everything will apply to you, and it dosn't mention digital connections.

Thanks so much for the response. I'll have to check out this stuff tomorrow. It's getting late here. One question though. If I hook my Mac mini into my receiver via the digital cable then what must my receiver be on in order to hear the sound? (Video 1, Video 2, etc.)
