I bought a clamshell 466 graphite iBook on eBay (OS9 /64 megs ram /10 gigs HD). The computer boot the system, the LCD backlight lighten but the screen stay white with no data (I can hear the HD booting the system and I can shut off the computer pushing on the power switch and return key). Booting from an installation disk gives the same result. I can see the clamshell HD if I boot in target mode with my PowerBook. I tried to connect my iPod photo AV cable from the video output of the computer to my AV TV set but nothing appears on the TV screen (maybe it's not a good cable to test the video output ???). I also tried to reset the power manager and the pram without success.

So what could be the problem ? LCD display ? inverter ? or motherboard ?

    Thanks for your support....

I would say that the LCD is bad. If it was the motherboard, then it wouldn't boot at all. Do you hear the Mac Chime (BONG) after pressing the power button? If you don't hear the mac chime then something internally is wrong with it. I would think that since you can hear the computer to continue to boot, then its mostly likely not the motherboard.

Did the eBay seller guarantee DOA, or a 30 day warranty? If so, I would notify the seller and ask to send it back for a refund.

Yes I can hear the Mac chime at startup and the iBook was advertised on eBay as a broken iBook. But the unit is mint and will buy used parts to repair it and give it to my girldfriend. So if the motherboard is OK, what would I have to replace ? inverter or LCD display or both ?
    Thanks for helping !!!

If your going to replace the screen, you might as well replace the inverter and cable also. If I remember correctly, if the bulb or inverter are bad, you will still be able to read the screen in bright sunlight. There were two different LCDs used on colored iBooks. Each one had it's own cable. Those computers are tanks. The only thing that stopped mine was being hit by a car while on my bike. I came out of it in worse condition than my iBook.

Take a look at PBFixIt.com for instructions and parts.

Exactly what does it show on the screen? Is it just black? Or, does it turn on but nothing appears?

Yes it turns on but nothing appears. So the backlight is working.

Maybe somebody was in there trying to repair it and screwed the connectors up. You could give that a look and make sure it's firmly seated or the pins are not bent/broken!

Yes good idea.....but as I can see looking at the screws head it seems that the computer had never been opened. But I'll check the wires and connectors for sure. Thanks !!!
