This might eb a stupid question, but I'm new to macs so...

I have heard several people talk about kernals, kernal panics, etc.

    What are these?

cyberddot has provided you with a good link.

In the future, I would recommend putting something meaningful in your thread title. By putting something useless and ambiguous such as "Quick Question", you're not going to attarct many responses.

    In your head.
Also if you just serch the forums, for something like Panic, you will find lots of threads that explain this.

In short the Kernel is the fundamental link between software and the hardware. If something glitches at either end, the kernel panics. Think of it as the base of the OS, but not the BIOS (built in opperating system- used for boot).

Go here for info. The site linked will also connect you to information about the spinning beachball of doom (not a kernel pannic).

Control-Closed Apple- Reset -> Kernel OK
    The old school Kernel check.
