Hey, I just downloaded a video and when I try playing it on quicktime, it just shows a blank white screen with no volume. It then said something about not having the right codec or something.

I then transferred the file to my PC and it played fine on Real Player so I know theres nothing wrong with the file.

I checked on the apple website and it said I need some sort of decrompressor codec. Does anyone know where I can get this and has anyone had any similar problems?

    Cheers

Well, you'll need to download RealPlayer for Mac. :)

Most likely it requires the divx codec to play in QuickTime Player.

hmmmm I downloaded that codec but it doesn't seem to work. I just get one of those blank files that says "there is no default application to open this file with". I would like to be able to play AVI's on quicktime. Any suggestions?

Have you tried selecting Quicktime as the application and tested to see if it plays back?

Ya, but it says something like "quicktime doesn't recognise this file".

There is the new DivX codec in the Mac Beginner's Guide in my sig. Try that and see if that works. :)

There is also an occasional IV50 codec that you may run across. As far as I know, that codec is only available for the OS9 version of Quicktime

I can now play AVI's in quicktime.

EDIT: ooops, one little thing. The sound doesn't work

Sorry to hear that it doesn't work for you completely. AVIs are always kind of a gamble... but most of them should work with that codec.

Ah yes, then VLC is perfect. I suggested Real Player because I thought it was a Real Media Movie.
Glad you found a solution! :)

maybe the .avi file uses xvid instead? use vlc player, and try to find out what video codec it really uses.
